summer, at last

I suppose you could say that I've been a little bored. Or perhaps that isn't quite accurate, it's more like uninspired. In the last few months I've had a strange myriad of health concerns, all of which seem like they have just magically... vanished. Of course, I'm thrilled! However, in the meantime, creating the most fantastically rich and sinful ice creams, sugary popsicles, or tender and juicy chops on the grill, haven't exactly felt like priorities when simultaneously reading about all-kale-all-the-time diets. Yes, I've read it all. And then some.

Pair this with the pressure of feeding an infant who is the spitting image of me, and the pressure mounts to ensure he does not have the same strange symptoms. Of course, I had to wonder just how similar he is, and the great motherly protective nature just increased nearly infinitely...

I suppose you'll see a few changes around here in the long term. Although, don't worry, I'm sure I will get back to eating some semblance of dessert eventually. It will probably have kale in it though, just in case.

As I get back to sharing, I'll be looking for inspiration. So why not start with everything I'd love to eat in August? Here's a teaser from Pinterest, where you can virtual pin boards of inspiration and share them with friends.

cook your way to better finances? And help me win!

I just finished writing about two things I'm very passionate about - cooking and finances.

I know that isn't the usual stint here, but I am now a guest-blogger in a contest.  Gulp.  I've never entered a contest like this before, and I hope you can help me win!

You can check out the financial tips I wrote (once it's published I'll post the link here), and leave a comment.  It would be so much appreciated! Or even retweet it, or like or share it on Facebook.  You can also share it on any of these networks – Delicious, Digg, Mixx, Google and Yahoo, OldDogg, Tipd and Reddit.

Soon, I'll be sharing my recipe for oven-baked olive oil fries.  They are wickedly good, and pretty darn easy too.  The hardest part is trying not to make more than you should actually eat, well, at least in one sitting.

I have entered the CCC Personal Finance Guest Blogging Contest, with thousands of dollars in prizes. I would like to thank Credit Cards Canada and the sponsors for making the prize money available…

I love to cook, don't get me wrong. But I am fairly certain that it is inspired by a desire to eat, and to eat well. Here's some help to get us cooking when perhaps we are a little less than creatively minded, and tired of the same old hum-drum meals. 1. What the Fuck Should I Make for Dinner? Oh my. Yes, that is the title, and my deepest apologies to the language sensitive. However. Once you are finished collecting yourself and your laughter, you will find a new recipe everyday, and even an extra one if you don't like it, or if you don't eat meat. 2. Artisan Bread in Five This just might be the key to making super boring meals into something a little more delicious, and certainly a lot more healthful. Read the ingredient list on hot dog buns lately? You get a gold star if you can pronounce everything. Now make your own. 3. Jamie Oliver's Recipes If you haven't heard of Jamie Oliver, you definitely get a prize for living under a rock. The thing is, most people either like him, or dislike him. Perhaps his cooking isn't authentic enough for you. Whatever that really means. But hey, if he has a recipe that helps you get dinner on the table, then why not? 4. Williams Sonoma Recipes Who woulda thought that a store would have mouth-watering recipes on their website? And there are a LOT of well-organized recipes here, and each recipe has a photo too. 5. MattBites Sometimes a few visual images are all I need to actually dream something up for dinner myself, when I though I was otherwise a recipe desert. Eat up!

Blog Aid for Haiti - A COOKBOOK!

Blog Aid Cover That's right, a cookbook! You can do a good thing, in fact, a really great thing by supporting relief efforts in Haiti - oh and you can be inspired to eat well too. And I'm so excited to have a few recipes in it! The whole project is thanks to Julie Van Rosendaal, of Dinner with Julie, as she organized 27 food bloggers into creating a cookbook in just over a couple weeks. Plus, there were many more people and organizations behind the scenes (do see Julie's blog for all the specific details). How Julie did all of this, is still beyond me. The woman is a machine! Here's all the delicious recipe folk who've contributed to make this beautiful softcover or hardcover book so incredibly awesome: Chef Michael Smith Dana McCauley Emily Richards Catharine from Weelicious Cheryl from Backseat Gourmet Jeannette of Everybody Likes Sandwiches Nishta from Blue Jean Gourmet Lauren of Celiac Teen Charmian from Christie’s Corner Shaina from Food for my Family Marisa of Food in Jars Shauna and Danny from Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef Lauren from Healthy Delicious Alice from Savory Sweet Life Tara from Seven Spoons Jess of Sweet Amandine Helen from Tartelette Pierre of Kitchen Scraps Tim from Lottie and Doof Tea from Tea & Cookies Jamie from My Baking Addiction Lori from Recipe Girl Melissa from The Traveler’s Lunchbox Brooke of Tongue-n-Cheeky Aimee of Under the High Chair Wow, wow, and wow! So yes, that is the reason why I've been so quiet for the last while as I went gung ho for a weekend, and then was all burnt out. I should be back at posting some yummy things here again soon, in a day or two. Oh and yes, what Julie said is true. My tummy is growing! Click on the photo below to check out the book!

lamb moussaka and Julie and Julia party

I like to cook. I really, really love it. But sometimes, even I can have my limits tested. This past Sunday, Julie Van Rosendaal graciously invited The Backseat Gourmet, Kitchenscraps, Patent and the Pantry, and myself to her place for a party to celebrate the release of the Julie and Julia movie on DVD, and just as an excuse to get together. And why not? So a potluck inspired by Julia Child sounds fantastic, and oh, believe me it was. But then there's the dilemma; what on earth to bring? What will travel well? And since, I think I was the last one to even begin to think about what to bring, the options were getting slim. But have no fear, I finally chose a dish the day before the big event. Lamb Moussaka it was. It sounds easy right? Sure. Yea, about as easy as sitting in a freezing cold car when it's -30degrees Celsius outside before it's warmed up. At first glance, it really did look easy. But then, you find that the recipe is essentially on at least an additional 3-4 pages since you are also required to have all kinds of sauces prepared first. Then, it IS easy. At first, I thought, I would share the recipe with you. But the more I've thought about it, it would be crazy for me, and even crazier for you. I followed the recipe(s), verbatim. As close as one can get. I did make one semi-important change, as I plated the dish in a souffle dish, instead of the charlotte pan that was called for. Okay, okay, I'll give you the boiled down version of this moussaka. But there's really no way I could possibly condense three of Julia Child's recipes all-in-one, or even three posts. Get the book. Just trust me. We started with a sumptuous vichysoisse by Gwendolyn, of Patent and the Pantry. It was so very silky, so very creamy, so, so good. Even if it is a great summer dish, it still hit the spot in the middle of snowbank season. She made it look so pretty too. potages parmentier Pierre's potatoes (Pommes Parisien) were definitely another highlight. Can you go wrong it perfectly shapen little bites of potato sautéed in butter. Crispy, buttery goodness. And, they certainly disappeared rather quickly; I didn't do it, I swear! pierre's potatoes I was addicted to Pierre's ratatouille with ample amounts of thyme. It was hard to stop! ratatouille, kitchenscraps Julie prepared these mushrooms and onions for her beef bourguignon. It smelled delicious, and we could hardly wait to eat. beef bourguignon mushrooms Then, she combined it with the beef, and we were ready to eat. Rich, hearty, and flavourful. Beef bourguignon; a definite winner. beef bouguignon Somehow, this poor "lowly" salad, didn't get much love. A little was eaten.... salad Before, I begin an annotated lamb moussaka epic adventure, I think I should tell you about desssert. Cheryl, of Backseat Gourmet, didn't let us down, nor did her soufflé. But, she still made two desserts, just in case. First up was the Reine de Saba, a chocolate and almond cake, with Glaçage au Chocolat. I mean who wants cake without icing? OK, maybe, but not after this one. reine de saba, backseat gourmet And then, just in case there was any doubt if we were full, Cheryl served us the Soufflé au Grand Marnier; and just as good as it looks. Rich, but airy, and just darn good stuff. It didn't last for long; can you blame us? Soufflé au Grand Marnier Describing Julia Child's lamb moussaka to anyone is a little tricky. Even trying to wrap my own brain around it was a little bit of an effort. This is NOT a Greek Moussaka. There is lamb and eggplant, and that's about it. lamb moussaka It's a molded dish, that takes the shape of the vessel it is cooked in, and then is to reveal the beautiful skins of the eggplants which have been emptied of their contents. I thought for sure they would be very tough, and somewhat terrible, but in fact, were actually incredibly tender and even tasty to boot. Here's the rundown (do follow her instructions exactly, as I didn't change a thing): -make Julia Child's tomato sauce. (Chop, chop, chop, cook, cook, cook, strain, strain, strain.) -make Julia Child's brown sauce. Kind of like a demi-glaze type of idea, and extraordinarily good. (Clarify butter, then chop, chop, chop, cook, cook, cook, strain, strain, strain.) -brown ground lamb -cut 1-pound eggplants in half, and salt them. Roast them with olive oil. Scoop out the flesh being careful not to break the skins. Chop the flesh and add to the ground lamb. -add 2/3 cup of brown sauce to the eggplant, lamb, and now more herbs, garlic, and eggs. -grease a charlotte pan or soufflé pan, and line with the eggplants -fill with the lamb -bake for a few hours -let cool for at least 10 minutes. Pray. Unmold the moussaka on a serving platter, and surround with the tomato sauce. Enjoy, because you'll probably never want to make this again, if only because of the semi-excessive amount of work for one dish. Good, but not without a little bit of painstaking effort. But thankfully, even though I was quite sick of cooking, the moussaka did turn out pretty swell. Phew! Although, the company of other food bloggers, was pretty darn swell too. I am fairly certain that no one was hungry for at least one day, or until we started drooling over the photos we took. So much fun, thanks to Julie for organizing the fun! Great cooking all!

Back at it! I am finding that there are just too many fun things out there that I need to share. 1. Eat Life - I just love this blog! Nothing complicated about it; just little tidbits about this and that. Some neat photos, and a few provocative ideas. Fun. 2. Blackbird Bakery - I can't believe it! A bakery that delivers to Canada too?! That is a first. Oh, and it's gluten-free. 3. My Cooking Hut - A beautiful and inspiring food blog; dessert heavy. 4. friday five fave food finds

I realize that I have been falling more and more behind. Like I've completely forgotten you. I would have called, and I'm really sorry that I didn't. But I think I can make it up to you now. I have so much to say! I have now delayed announcing that the blog has received the Arte y Pico Award, and I have now received it twice! I am flattered by Foong at The Food Site, and And also the I love your blog award. I'll have to announce the new recipients later in another post, as it seems that every time I was about to choose a new recipient, another blogger beat me to it! Here's my friday five fave food finds, and this week I decided to focus on Calgary-based sites: 1. Dinner with Julie, is created by local Calgary-based author and writer Julie van Rosendaal. It documents her daily dinners; each post is dedicated to a dinner for every day of the year! Sometimes, she features restaurant meals out, or the recipes for meals she created at home. It's an elegant, and tasteful blog. Bellissima! 2. Eat.Sleep..Dream...Food, is a blog to check out if you are not too hungry; the food photos, can easily cause an incontrollable mouth-watering desire to eat. It is a particularly useful tool for traveling to Western Canada, for finding desirable places to eat. 3. Edible Prairie Blog, contains all the Calgary food news you'd ever need or want to know. Best place on the web to stay up-to-date. 4. TasteReport.com, is a go-to resource on most everything related to food, by Calgary-based Cinda Chavich. I've been reading her recipes and articles for years, but here you'll find a wealth of resources, and I'm overly engrossed in the travel section - how about a slow-food tour of Piedmonte? 5. Moving to Calgary, is an absolutely hilarious, and informative read. Yes, I realize that it seems you would actually have to live in Calgary to be interested in this blog, but I disagree. It's written by "a guy that hates blogs", and decided to write one, and he writes the exact same things I say only in the closest company (I do despise the word blogger).... Read this if you want to double-over in laughter. Yes, enough already, I'll be back soon. In the meantime, here's a couple photos of a lazy Saturday breakfast: Jeff loves to make french toast from day-old baguettes, and I'm not complaining either. Photobucket I drink a lot of matcha tea, it makes you feel clean. Photobucket

friday five fave food finds

The days seem to come and go so embarrassingly quickly; I think the sun is becoming overwhelmingly shy. Although, I don't understand how I could have done it such terrible harm, I really didn't mean for it to disappear. But, I do hope it will come to play again soon. Perhaps it just requires a little pick-me-up of some lovely chocolate, as I often do. Let's just hope that's all the sun needs for a little rejuvenation. In the meantime, I have five fave food posts this week, but with a special twist. I've received an award! It's a super cool honour, especially coming from The Hungry Engineer - her blog is incredible! Now, I am to bestow the award to five recipients; who's blogs are also the friday five fave food finds: 1. Vanessa at ItalyInSF, is super inspiring, which constantly makes me want to fly to Italy immediately. Yes, yes, I know I always want to go to Italy, but seriously, she's that much more convincing! Plus, it's a little like going to Italy just by following her posts. How great is that!? 2. Bentoist writes the most adorable, and addicting blog about all kinds of scrumptious treats placed and served in bento boxes. Bentoism, features her mouth-watering creations, and sublime recipes. 3. Michael Natkin's, Herbivoracious, is certainly a delicious read. Every recipe has perfectly clear photos, and is a very professional site. Basically, everything I want to eat all the time. 4. Jason's BBQ Adventures, keeps me going on the grill. Burn baby burn! Okay, so that isn't the idea, but I can't help but to completely endorse his, "sometimes, simple is good". So very true, and everything on his site is much more than simple. Looks can be deceiving, as nothing tastes simple. Just a single mention of pulled pork, and that would already have been over the top. Yum! 5. Christine, at Love Me, Love My Dog, writes about her dog Wiggles, and his ability to clog the vacuum. I'm not joking, but he is an adorable pup who is into most everything, gotta love him. But she also posts yummy things like Triple Chocolate Chipotle Brownies! Congratulations all!
